Matt Holliday’s four RBIs help St. Louis Cardinals defeat Cincinnati Reds 8-1 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ left-fielder, Matt Holliday showed an amazing performance with his bat as he hit two home-runs and four RBIs in the Cardinals’ 8-1 victory against the Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium, St. Louis on July 5.
The Cardinals got off to a quick start as they posted two runs in the very first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Holliday hit a one-run homer (378 feet) to left-field and Lance Berkman struck a solo homer (427 feet) towards right-field to give the Cardinals a
solid start. During the second and third inning, the batters got out on tricky pitches.
In the fourth inning, the Reds opened their scoring account to cut their deficit 2-1 when Scott Rolen was grounded out to short-stop and Brandon Phillips posted a single run. The Cardinals blasted three runs at the bottom of the fifth inning to get a 5-1
lead. Holliday hit his second homer (422 feet) of the game towards centre-field while Ryan Theriot and Jon Jay both singled to complete a three-run campaign.
At the bottom of the sixth inning, the Cardinals again posted three runs to extend their lead 8-1. Mark Hamilton singled to shallow centre-field, Yadier Molina scored one run and Skip Schumaker advanced to third base. The second and third run was taken by
Schumaker and Hamilton, respectively, when Theriot doubled off deep centre-field.
The Cardinals’ starter, Jaime Garcia gave up just one run on two hits in his six inning pitches. He had four strike-outs and permitted three walks on 95 pitches. Garcia said, “It's always good for the team, we're doing great hitting. But to be honest with
you, I'm trying to do my best at not worrying about what's going on offensively or with the other pitcher.”
The last three innings were in favour of the pitchers as they did not allow any batter to take a run. Berkman was struck-out swinging and David Freese flied out towards right-field in the seventh inning. The Reds’ batters missed scoring opportunities when
Jonny Gomes walked but Jay Bruce flied out to left-field and Fred Lewis struck-out swinging at the top of the ninth inning.
After this valuable win, the Cardinals confirmed a 2-0 victory in a three-game series against the Reds at St. Louis.
