Matt Holliday’s homer helps St. Louis Cardinals defeat Kansas City Royals 5-4 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ left-fielder, Matt Holliday had a notable day with the bat as he went 2-for-3 and hit two RBIs including a solo homer in the Cardinals’ 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals at Busch Stadium, St. Louis on June 18.
The Cardinals won their first game after a long span and tied the series 1-1 against the Royals at St. Louis.
In the first inning, the Cardinals got off the mark and took a 1-0 lead when Colby Rasmus hit a sacrifice fly towards left-field and Ryan Theriot scored a single run. Second inning was full of runs as the Royals added two at the top and the Cardinals posted
one run at the bottom of the second inning.
Alcides Escobar tripled to deep left-centre while Matt Treanor and Chris Getz both contributed two runs for the Royals. On the other side, Lance Berkman posted a tie run when Daniel Descalso hit a sacrifice fly to left-field and the score-board moved to
2-2.
During the third inning, the Cardinals went ahead 3-2 when Albert Pujols doubled to deep centre-field and Skip Schumaker scored a single run. The Royals’ batters added one run at the top of the fourth inning and again tied the game 3-all when Treanor hit
a one-run homer (392 feet) to left-field.
In the fifth and sixth inning of the game, no score was contributed from either side as the pitchers threw the ball in perfect line. Jake Westbrook was expensive for the Cardinals as he permitted four runs on eight hits including four earned runs and in
seven inning pitches. He threw with an ERA of 5.16 and allowed one walk on his 121 pitches.
The Royals got a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning when Alex Gordon struck a solo homer (420 feet) towards right-field. But in the eighth inning, the Cardinals took a 5-4 lead by scoring two runs. Rasmus put one run on the score-board while Holliday hit a decisive
homer (433 feet) to centre-field.
Holliday said of his game, “I thought timing might be an issue. But I saw the ball pretty well.”
The batters failed to contribute any run in the ninth inning.
