Matt Hughes asserts Dana White is showing him the road to retirement – UFC News
Matt Hughes, the once most dominating mixed martial artist in the UFC, believes his time is over and that president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship Dana White is showing him the way towards retirement. Hughes, who has suffered two consecutive knockout
losses, has been out of the cage since September 2011, and he does not regret it.
“I wouldn't say I closed the door on my MMA career, but I got my hand on the door handle,” said Hughes in an interview with the MMA Hour. “It's been over a year since I fought and I am having a good time with my family and raising my kids.”
Hughes is a former welterweight titlist who holds several title defences and fight wins records. Today, he is 39 and there is not much he can do to revive his career.
“I'm having a good time at home with my family and I kind of maybe lost the desire a little bit to compete,” he added.
He added that Dana White has already shown him the red signal by saying that he has nothing more to prove. According to Hughes, for a person like Dana White to say something like that means he means something. However, Hughes has no grudges regarding White,
instead he believes the President is talking in his best interest.
Hughes added that he believes White can still earn a lot by putting him on the cards but there is nothing left in him to show.
According to Hughes, today he is 39 and he does not recover the way he used to before. He even admits that he is not as strong as he was long time back.
With a little smirk, Hughes added that it is funny how his opponents have stayed the same age while he kept getting older in the past ten years.
For now, Hughes believes it is time for him to hang his gloves before he is totally finished. He has had a legendary career and it is better for him, like any other athlete, to retire when he remains the champion for fans.
