Matt Jones leads the Puerto Rico Open by three strokes
Matt Jones is on the top of the leaderboard on Friday, after the completion of the second round, at the Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com.
The 31-year-old Australian professional started the tournament amazingly and scored a 6-under 66 in the first round at the Trump International Golf Club, Rio Grande in Puerto Rico.
He carded five birdies, an eagle and a bogey. His impressive scoring was matched by the American George McNeill and they were both tied for the first position.
McNeill finished the first round by scoring six birdies. He delivered impressive strokes and remained bogey-free till the end of the first round.
Later on Friday, Jones further improved his scores and added a 5-under par and 67 strokes in the second round.
He displayed an amazing performance in both rounds and secured the top place on the leaderboard.
"I've been putting really well and chipping unbelievably well," Jones said. "My ball-striking was much better yesterday. I missed a few greens today".
The weather on Friday was tough, as winds blew at 23 mile per hour. In such circumstances, Jones amazed the spectators by completing a bogey-free round and by recording five enormous birdies in total.
"It started to kick up maybe around the eighth, ninth hole, but compared to yesterday, I didn't really feel it," Jones said.
He continued, "Growing up in Australia, we're used to playing in the wind. It's nothing uncommon, and I actually, more often than not, enjoy playing in the wind because it makes you not worry about score so much. You worry about hitting the shots one shot
at a time, and you play a little smarter".
He competed well against McNeill, who is now at the second position and three strokes behind the Australian leader.
McNeill failed to continue his massive bogey-free performance and carded three bogeys on Friday.
However, he also recorded three birdies that helped him to be on the runner-up position at the end of the day.
Both professionals did very well and now the competition has been hardened by Jones's leading position.
Two rounds have been completed and still there are ample chances for McNeill to claim back the leading position from Jones.
