Matt Jones tied with Scott Brown for the fifth at Puerto Rico Open
Australian Matt Jones finished tied with Scott Brown, for the fifth position in the Puerto Rico Open at the Trump International Golf Club, Rio Grande in Puerto Rico.
Both players scored 12-under par and 276 strokes in total. They competed well for the title right from the start of the event, but George McNeill's enormous score made him the winner of PGA-staged event.
Jones, a 31-year-old professional carded 15 impressive birdies, an eagle and 51 pars in total. He covered a tremendous average driving distance of 291.9 yards with 57.1 accuracy.
He was leading till Friday, for carding only one bogey in the first and playing a bogey-free second round.
His leading position was claimed by McNeill, as Jones carded four bogeys in the last two rounds on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
This was Jones' fourth tournament in the current season. He was unable to make the cut in two tournaments in February, but displayed an improved performance, swing and strokes at Puerto Rico Open.
With several birdies and an eagle, Jones finished the event by recording impressive scores. This was his best finish of the year.
Similarly, Brown, a 28-year-old American professional golfer, also played well in the four-day tournament.
He was competing amazingly along with the Australian, but due to improved performance by Jones, he finished tied for the fifth position on the leaderboard.
Brown also scored 15 birdies, an eagle, 51 pars and 5 bogeys. He was mostly at par and carded fewer bogeys if compared to the previous PGA-staged tournaments.
He played a total of seven events this year and missed the cut in all the tournaments, except the Puerto Rico Open.
The Trump International Golf Club became the luckiest venue for him, as he was able to make the cut here and record an impressive finish at the fifth position in the end.
Both players never won any PGA-staged event and have been striving hard to record a victory, since turning professional.
However, they still have to improve further and also have to face tough rivals.
The competition is at its new highs these days and average scoring may not help in future. The reason is the participation of young and energetic professionals and their good performances.
