Matt Joyce’s three run homer helps Tampa Bay Rays beat New York Yankees 4-1 – MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays rallied past New York Yankees 4-1 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Wednesday, May 9 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season. With their win over the Yankees, the Rays also improved
their win-loss record to 20-11.
Showing great determination, fighting spirit and mental abilities, the Rays surprised their rivals by scoring four runs in the ninth. Yankees drew the first blood as Robinson Cano doubled to left and Derek Jeter scored in the first inning.
Both teams failed to score any runs in the next seven innings and it seemed the Yankees will secure a narrow win. B.J. Upton delivered for the Rays just at the right time, hitting a sacrifice fly to right and Sean Rodriguez scored to level the score at 1-1.
The star of the show was Matt Joyce who hit a three run home run in the bottom of the ninth to break New York’s hearts. Joyce has looked in commanding form in the games he has played this season and it will be interesting to see if he can put up a similar
show in the decisive finale to win the series for Tampa Bay.
"Eventually, I'm not going to be able to get out of all my messes that I create. It was really tough, just a sad way to end the game," he said. "You're not always going to be perfect out there. I had a good stretch. It just stinks when you do give up the
runs."
"I kind of told myself I had to," Joyce said in a post game interview. "You can't really have somebody else pinch run for you there. There's really no other option."]
Rays have certainly made the most of available opportunities against New York Yankees since the start of the season. With four wins in five games between the two sides, the Rays have enjoyed success more often than not. Joe Maddon and company were defeated
by the Yankees in the opening game and the fans expected them to put up a fighting performance in the second game.
