Matt Kenseth takes pole position for Kobalt Tools 400 – Sprint Cup, NASCAR news
Matt Kenseth in his No. 17 Ford Fusion ran the fastest on the Las Vegas Motor Speed way to take pole position for the Sprint Cup race Kobalt Tools 400, with a speed of 188.88 mph with a time of 28.589 seconds.

The Sprint Cup race will be held on Sunday at the 1.5-mile oval track. Kenseth led three Roush Fenway Fords placed in top-five to qualify for Sunday’s race. Carl Edwards No. 99 Ford concluded his day on third place and Greg Biffle No. 16 was on fourth
place to qualify. Overall Ford stood high on top-four positions in the qualifying chart.
“It feels great,” said Kenseth. “Qualifying is not my strong suit but I knew we had a really fast car today when we did our last qualifying run. Honestly this is the most nervous I have been before qualifying in probably five years at least because
I knew we had a shot at the pole and I knew last week we really messed up. I didn’t want to mess up a fast car today, so I was really happy with that.”
Richard Petty Motorsports driver Marcos Ambrose in his No. 9 Ford qualified at second place following Kenseth. Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kyle Busch and Joey Logano finished at fifth and sixth places respectively in their Toyotas.
David Ragan despite of having a fast car to qualify, spun in turn two after running high and could not finish the lap. He didn’t get in contact of any object and managed to save his car. He will start at 42nd place on the grid, after getting
his green flag of the qualifying session.
“We have a great car and I wish we could have finished that lap,” Ragan said. “It was going to be fast. We were going to be on the front row but I just didn't do what I needed to do to get back around.”
Daytona 500 star kid Trevor Bayne led the pole for a few minutes during the session, but Mark Martin passed him to gain the lead. Martin tasted the lead run for a while when Las Vegas native Kyle Busch took the lead from Martin by running a faster
lap. Ambrose snatched the lead from Busch and Kenseth was the final man to hold onto the lead to the final moment of the session.
