Matt Kuchar and Zach Johnson take first round lead at CVS Caremark Charity Classic
Matt Kuchar and Zach Johnson smashed a score of 13-under-par, 58 in the first round of the CVS Caremark Charity Classic to take a one-stroke lead over defending champions J.B. Holmes and Ricky Barnes. The Professional Golf Association
(PGA) Tour event is taking place at the Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington.
The 32-year-old pro, Kuchar contributed with four birdies out of a grand number of thirteen, while rest were earned by Johnson. The duo teed-off from the front in the best-ball format and birdied seven holes, which set the platform
for a fabulous performance at the back, where together they reeled six birdies.
Kuchar, who is the seventh seed, was extremely happy with the team effort.
“Zach was the leader in the group. He was playing some solid golf. But I filled in on 17 and 18. I helped out here and there but it was a pretty solid team effort,” said Kuchar, after rolling a 12-foot long birdie putt on the closing
hole at the back.
He shared a big laugh with the press and his partner Johnson, and said that the CVS Caremark Charity Classic helped him overcome the stress of US Open and travelling fatigue that came in the package.
Kuchar added, “I was tired ... I was beat up. The U.S. Open takes its toll and then travelling and getting in last night at midnight. It was nice to be able to come out here and have some fun.”
Johnson, who contributed most of the birdies, shared similar views with the press. He said that competing in events like the best ball was fun, as it was a team event and it is always fun playing in such tournaments.
The duo took a one-stroke lead over Holmes and Barnes, who reeled 12 birdies in the day. The pair, who lifted last year’s trophy, par-equalled the 18th hole and took a seat behind the hottest strikers of the day.
The only ace of the day was recorded by LPGA diva Juli Inkster, who putted from ten feet on par-4, sixth hole to earn the honours.
