Matt Kuchar gives himself a perfect birthday gift by shooting 67 at the Travelers
After winning the Players Championship, Matt Kuchar delivered only a satisfactory performance in the next few tournaments. He managed a T27 finish at the US Open.
Coming into the Travelers Championship, it was expected that Matt Kuchar would do well. Kuchar was appearing in this tournament after four years. He had last played in 2008.
Being a junior, he had played at the TPC River Highlands earlier as well, so he knew what the course was like, it was not new for him.
Being familiar with the course does not mean that the success is guaranteed. One has to strive for it and that is what Matt did.
He shot 3-under par to stand tied at T15, after the first round, just three shots short of the leader, David Mathis.
The world number six recorded, four birdies, one eagle and three bogeys in the round first round. It was the bogeys that pulled him down. Nevertheless, it was a valiant effort.
Being the birthday boy, the best gift Matt could give to himself was by playing some excellent golf and that is precisely what he did.
He is well within the range of becoming the leader after round one. David Mathis is not too ahead of Kuchar.
After round one, Matt Kuchar was expected to see his grandparents at the lunch. When he was a young kid, he used to visit his grandparents and in the evening, he used to play at Madison islands.
Kuchar has fond memories of visiting his grandparents in his younger days. He said, “I can remember going out and playing golf in the evening, looking for balls in the woods, thinking that was a lot of fun to do as a kid”.
About playing the Travelers Championship right after the US Open, Kuchar said that every PGA event is a huge event and it is contested by the best players around the globe.
Kuchar really enjoys playing at this golf course, because he was a frequent visitor here during the time of his youth.
