Matt Kuchar has early round two lead
Matt Kuchar has bumped round one leaders Bubba Watson and Francisco Molinari from the top spot after shooting five-under 67 Friday morning when play resumed from another fog delay at the PGA Championship.
On Thursday, early morning fog delayed play for three hours and 10 minutes, forcing 78 players to retire before they could complete their first round when it became too dark to continue play. Kuchar was amongst these players, and was tied with Watson and Molinari’s four-under when he was had to quit at the 14th hole.
On Friday morning fog once again stopped play on the Whistling Straits course, delaying Kuchar from finishing his first round once again. But everything worked out for the best it seems; when golf resumed at 10:40 am ET Kuchar played his way to five-under 67 and is an early second round leader.
Kuchar is a U.S. amateur champ and earned a birdie on the par-4 sixth hole, the15th hole of his first round but first of the day on Friday. Kuchar has never finished better than 48th at a major and holds a one shot lead over Watson and Molinari.
There are at least 50 other players yet to complete their first round, including Ernie Els who was tied at four-under when he was force to quit yesterday at the 17th hole. South Korea’s Seung Yul Noh birdied his 17th hole, the par-4-eigthth to compete his first round score of four-under 68.
Nick Watney had been tied at four-under when play restarted this morning but he bogeyed the par-4 14th hole and lost three strokes. He is now tied with Jason Day, Ryan Moor and Charles Howell III at three-under 69.
The PGA Championship could be headed into worse weather; as the morning fog receded thunderstorms loomed on the Lake Michigan horizon. The second round is scheduled to being at 12:10 p.m ET
