Matt Kuchar on top through halfway mark at The Barclays – Golf news
American golfer, Matt Kuchar seems to be doing everything right for the moment, successfully extending his overnight lead for the second day at The Barclays, the first leg of the FedExCup Playoffs. Pulling in yet another dazzling display of accuracy and
skill, Kuchar carded second round score of six-under, 65, to stay clear from the rest of the field by one stroke.
He is now on the aggregate of 14-under, 128, through the halfway mark, although, this time around, this may not exactly be the halfway mark in literal terms.
The event has been cut short to 54 holes in wake of the approaching hurricane Irene brewing in the Atlantic, which is predicted to hit the state of New Jersey and the Plainfield Country Club in probably two days time. Organisers of the event were seen pulling
out heavy billboards and dismantling giant electronic screens throughout the course. Saturday’s third round will now be the final round of the event.
“The best players generally come out winners after 72, so for me, I feel like the more golf we play, the better my chances,” Kuchar said. “But given the situation, I love being on top of the leaderboard with 18 holes to go. Hard to find something to complain
about with the situation I'm in. Yeah, I'm quite happy that I've got this opportunity. I just feel like we've got one last round to go.”
Kuchar, one of the top ranking American players, poised at Number 12 spot on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), pulled in six birdies on the second day in his bogey-free round to grab the outright lead. He had a brilliant first day on the course where
he carded an amazing score of eight-under, 63, pulling in a whooping nine birdies and dropping juts one shot at par-three, 14th.
The $7.5-million event will be followed by three other events which will round up the lucrative $10-million FedExCup. Some 100 players from the Barclays will proceed to the second event and another 70 will proceed to the third. Top-30 players of the three
events will face each other in the final event, the Tour Championship, to mark the end of the four-week tournament.
