Matt Kuchar wins the Players Championship – Golf News
Matt Kuchar carded a two-under par 70 in the final round of the Players Championship to take two-stroke at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course on Sunday, May 13, 2012.
Kuchar started his round with one stroke behind Kevin Na, who had a three-round score of 12-under par.
Na failed to hold on to his lead and faltered in the final round to settle for a four-over par 76 to slip down the leaderboard at tied for the seventh position.
Similarly, Kuchar also did not have a good start, as he carded a bogey on very first hole that he played.
However, he then tried to maintain his focus and started playing some good shots on the course. As a result, he managed to record four birdies that were enough to leave behind rivals on the leaderboard.
“It is an amazing feeling, too, the field at THE PLAYERS Championship,” he said. “You think of this as one of the strongest fields in golf. To come out as the champion is just an amazing feeling”.
Kuchar was also happy to register his first Players’ win on the Mothers Day and dedicated his win to his parents.
"I'm about to buckle, it's such an amazing feeling," Kuchar said. "To do it on Mothers Day, while staying with Mum and Dad, it's just magical”.
Martin Laird, Rickie Fowler, Zach Johnson and Ben Curtis were all tied for the second place with an 11-under par tournament score each.
In the meantime, Luke Donald made a great finish, as he carded a six-under par 66 to take the sole sixth spot on the leaderboard.
The highlight of his performance includes the back-nine performance where he managed to score six birdies.
The best performances of the day were recorded by David Toms and Bob Estes, who recorded a seven-under par 65 each.
Toms recorded seven birdies and an eagle against two bogeys. On the other hand, Estes did not have any eagle added to his round. Yet, he had less number of bogeys (1) and signed his scorecard with eight birdies.
The defending champion KJ Choi was already out of the field, as he missed the cut on Friday.
