Matt Lloyd and Alessandro Petacchi both to represent Lampre-ISD at the Tour Down Under 2012
As the transfer season is almost over, most of the teams are ready to take on the coming season with the Tour Down Under 2012. The South Australian race will start in the third week of January. Italian star sprinter, Alessandro Petacchi stated that his 2012
season will begin from the Tour Down Under.
Petacchi will be accompanied by the former Omega Pharma-Lotto cyclist, Matt Lloyd, who has joined Lampre-ISD for the season ahead.
He started his professional career with Team Lotto in 2007 and stayed with the team for five years before finally moving to Lampre.
Lloyd’s departure from Team Lotto was rather unexpected and it was rumoured that the cyclist was released by the team because of drug related problems. It was cleared later on that Matt was freed from the team because of “behavioural reasons”.
Team Lampre-ISD announced its team of seven members for the coming event. Grega Bole, Danilo Hondo, Davide Cimolai, Davide Vigano, Massimo Graziato, Alessandro Petacchi and Matthew Lloyd will represent the Australian side for the World Tour race.
Petacchi commented on the Tour Down Under 2012, “The management staff floated the idea of the starting the season in Australia, and after thinking about it for a while, I accepted the opportunity with interest”.
He further added, “I’m sure it will be a valid experience, especially because it will give me the chance to improve my understanding with my teammates”.
The 37-year-old briefed that the early start will certainly help him in securing some WorldTour points to his credit.
Alessandro told Gazzetta dello that he will prefer earning some WorldTour points instead of riding at the Giro d’ Italia 2012.
Bruno Vicino, the team’s Sports Director, believed that the Tour will help Petacchi warm up and get into form early on.
He mentioned, “The Santos Tour Down Under is the best chance to try out the workings of the train to support Petacchi”.
Team Lampre-ISD has announced a tough line-up for the race and it will be fascinating to see if Petacchi can earn some WorldTour points and help his team with a victory.
