Matt McGloin to get start for Penn State Nittany Lions
Nittany Lions head coach Joe Paterno has announced that the club will start Matt McGloin at quarterback when Penn State takes on the Ohio State Buckeyes in week 11 action.
The Nittany Lions have had a slight quarterback controversy since freshman Rob Bolden was knocked out of the squad’s game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers on 23 October with a concussion. The following week, Paterno said he did not feel comfortable playing
Bolden, and McGloin was given the starting job against the Michigan Wolverines, leading the club to a 41-31 victory.
Paterno then stated he planned to use both quarterbacks against the Northwestern Wildcats in week 10. Bolden was given the start and McGloin came in part-way through, leading the Nittany Lions to an impressive 35-21 come-from-behind victory, which earned
Paterno has 400th win as an NCAA coach.
The Nittany Lions have managed to turn their season around in the past three weeks after the team slowed down through the middle portion of their schedule. After two consecutive losses, McGloin took over at quarterback, leading the team to three victories
and bowl eligibility. Penn State currently sits at 6-3 with a 3-2 record against conference opponents, which is good enough for fifth in the Big Ten.
The Nittany Lions have a difficult schedule to end the season, with three games against conference opponents, in Ohio State, the Indiana Hoosiers and the Michigan State Spartans.
Regardless of the fact that McGloin will get the start against Ohio State, Paterno has mentioned that he will still consider using both quarterbacks in the match-up.
So far this season, McGloin has tossed for 551 yards, seven touchdowns and zero interceptions, while Bolden has notched 1,350 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions.
