Matt McLean secures Men’s 200m freestyle gold – 2013 GHSF Australian Championships
Matt McLean of University Virginia Aquatics secured gold medal of the Men’s 200m freestyle on the opening day of the 2013 Arena Grand Prix at Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte on Friday, May 10.
With his gruelling pace, Schmitt gained marginal lead over his challengers from the start and tapped the wall for the title.
He faced tough competition from his following swimmer in the playoff and surfaced on the finishing end for first position by producing an effort of 1 minute and 49.02 seconds.
The first position holder was followed by Conor Dwyer of Lake Forest, who was only 0.27 seconds behind and tapped the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 49.29 seconds for silver medal.
The second best finisher was chased by Joseph Schooling of Bolles School Sharks, who was only 0.18 seconds apart and reached the finishing end by producing a time of 1 minute and 49.47 seconds.
The third position holder was trailed by Ricky Berens of Longhorn Aquatic, who stayed 0.03 seconds slower and posted a time of 1 minute and 49.50 seconds for fourth place.
Fifth spot of the race was obtained by Connor Jaeger of Club Wolverine, who was 0.09 seconds apart and posted a time of 1 minute and 49.59 seconds.
Sixth position of the race was obtained by Ryan Lochte of Daytona Beach Swimming, who was only 0.22 seconds slower and hit the finishing end with the timing of 1 minute and 49.81 seconds.
Lochte was followed by Michael Klueh of Club Wolverine, who was just a stroke apart and tapped the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 50.01 seconds for seventh place.
Eighth fastest spot of the event was obtained by Charlie Houchin of iX3 Sports, who was unable to overpower any of his opponents. He remained only 0.35 seconds slower from his preceding swimmer and clocked a time of 1 minute and 50.36 seconds.
In addition, Matt received a huge round of applause from the audience for his notable efforts while the position holders received medals and accolades at the prize distribution ceremony of the event.
