Matt Purke goes through shoulder surgery, says MASN's Byron Kerr - MLB Update
Washington Nationals’ third round pick of 2011, Matt Purke has undergone shoulder surgery, as per the reports of Mid-Atlantic Sports Network’s Byron Kerr.
It will be a grave concern for the Nationals that the left-hander they have invested money by offering him a contract has suffered an injury at such a young age.
Purke was inducted by the Nationals mainly due to his excellent credentials for becoming a Major League pitcher.
Most of the Nationals’ officials believed that within few years he will be playing in the big league and will be rewarding the trust the management showed in his abilities.
Unfortunately, surgery may affect him in many ways. There is a possibility that his repertoire of skills also suffer due to this.
Every player that goes through surgery spends a great amount of time in complete rehabilitation before he can return to baseball activities.
It can be feared that his entry in the Major League which otherwise may have taken a fewer number of years is delayed. As a result, he can undermine the plans of the team officials with regard to bringing him at the Major League level.
Most of the teams are extremely cautious while they acquire a player through draft, especially when they are doubtful about the health of the pitchers. Some of the clubs even relinquish the idea of obtaining the most promising pitching prospects on the grounds
of apprehensions regarding their future health.
The organisations have reasons to show concern and be proactive in this regard. They do not want to freeze their money on players who will be available only intermittently throughout their career. Furthermore, the extra care that some of the injury-prone
pitchers demand can discourage them.
Nationals will be aware of the experience of Stephen Strasburg and how they are looking after him even when he appears to be fit.
Strasburg underwent surgery. Even when he recovered completely, the Nationals had to impose an innings limit on him in the recently concluded regular season.
As a result of the shut-down of Strasburg, the Nationals struggled in the playoffs because they were without their ace who can guarantee wins in important games.
In light of this, Purke’s surgery can require similar treatment from the Nationals in the years to come.
Regardless of the talent of these hurlers if they cannot show up all through the season, they can hardly be considered valuable for the team. It will be hoped that Purke’s surgery is not of a serious nature and that he recovers soon.
Further reports regarding how much rehabilitation period will be for Purke have not surfaced yet.
The Nationals will be hoping that his surgery reduces the possibility of potential injuries to him and renders Purke a healthy player.
