Matt Schaub’s foot surgery: Houston Texans patient with his recovery through individual workout
The Houston Texans have decided to take a precautionary approach with quarterback, Matt Schaub, until start of the team’s training camp, which is described to be the stipulated timeline the player foresees himself recovering fully from a foot surgery.
Schaub had to have a surgery to repair Lisfranc injury in the right foot last year and has not played a single game or practised since then.
He had another follow-up procedure in April this year and has confirmed to be able to recover fully and participate in the team’s activities by the training camp.
The management has apparently accepted his assurance and showed willingness to let him to work on his recovery and fitness through individual workout.
Gary Kubiak, the Texans’ coach, has noted the fact that the player needs to be overseen and guided over not doing anything such as collective workout, which can risk aggravating his injury.
Kubiak said:
"If we're not paying attention, he'll do everything, but we're not going to let him do that."
The coach added:
"We're going to put the reins on him, so to speak. He will do drill work, could throw some seven-on-seven, but he will not be put in a team environment where he might get tripped up or something like that happens."
Schaub has not returned to the squad for any team activity since week 10 of the 2011 National Football League (NFL) season due to the injury.
Still, he said to be happy that his team had made it to the playoffs and won the American Football Conference (AFC) South division title without him, for the first time in their franchise history.
It was a remarkable achievement by Texans, who at one stage of the season were struggling with their quarterback situation. They were left to rookie, T.J. Yates, after losing first Schaub and then Matt Leinart to respective injury problems.
The team expects the situation improving with return of Schaub this season.
It will be sixth consecutive year of Schaub’s career with Texans. He has performed into the starting role throughout.
Overall, he is going to enter into 9th season of his NFL career.
