Matt Targett and Ellen Fullerton dominate in Adelaide: Final day – Australian Short Course Nationals
Final session of the 2011 Australian Short Course Championships witnessed the scintillating swims of Matt Targett and Ellen Fullerton in their respective meets in Adelaide, on Sunday, July 3, 2011.
Matt Targett captured the golden crown in the Men’s 50m freestyle event, while Ellen Fullerton nabbed the Women’s 200m Individual Medley meet for the gold medal.
Initially, Targett took home the Men’s 50m freestyle title with a fastest time of 21.31 seconds, while Kenneth To wound up second in 21.55 seconds.  Matthew Abood earned third place honours in 21.72 seconds, whereas, Kyle Richardson wound up fourth in 21.76
seconds. Andrew Abood earned fifth place honours in 21.90 seconds and Cameron Mcevoy touched the finishing wall for the eighth position in 22.30 seconds.
Targett earlier won one silver and bronze medal each, in the Men’s 4x100m medley and 4x100m freestyle events at the 2008 Olympic Games, Beijing.
Ellen Fullerton grabbed the Women’s 200m IM crown with a sterling time of 2 minutes and 08.24 seconds. Samant Wilkins finished second in 2 minutes and 10.64 seconds, while Pengelly earned bronze in 2 minutes and 12.93 seconds. Aisling Scott settled fourth
in 2 minutes and 13.38 seconds, whereas Caitl Mitchell finished fifth in a time of 2 minutes and 14.03 seconds.
In the third race, Leith Brodie took home the Men’s 400m IM crown with a victorious time of 4 minutes 14.03 seconds. Brodie earlier won two bronze medals in the Men’s 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle events at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Besides, he secured
the gold medal in the Men’s 4x200m freestyle meet at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Like other swimmers, Brodie’s ultimate desire is to win her first ever gold title at the 2012 Olympic Games, in London.
Meanwhile, Travis Mahoney wound up second in 4 minutes and 16.80 seconds, while Stephen Parkes earned third place honours in 4 minutes and 17.31 seconds. Nishimoto finished fourth in 4 minutes and 20.12 seconds, whereas, Craig Nicoll settled fifth in a time
of 4 minutes and 22.50 seconds.
Earlier, Leisel Jones won the gold medal in the Women’s 50m breast-stroke meet with a time of 29.92 seconds. Jones said, “I think the altitude training is working.”
In addition, Brenton Rickard earned gold title in the Men’s 200m breast-stroke event with a time of 2 minutes and 08.02 seconds, whereas, Kylie Palmer nabbed the Women’s 200m freestyle crown in a winning time of 1 minute and 55.07 seconds.
