Matt White delighted after Matthew Goss’ Giro win
Team Orica-GreenEdge Sports Director Matt White has appreciated the team’s attempt during the third stage of the Giro d’ Italia.
The combined effort helped the team with its first ever victory at the Grand Tour events that came through Matthew Goss.
The Australian cyclist finished the race in a quickest time of 4 hours, 20 minutes and 53 seconds and occupied the top podium spot.
Juan Jose Haedo of Team Saxo Bank and Tyler Farrar of Team Garmin-Barracuda finished at the second and the third spots.
While commenting on the stage victory White noted that the team worked as a unit and Goss took full use of the efforts made by his team-mates to seal the deal at the 190 kilometre race.
He noted, "It had been frustrating time for Matt. He'd been in good shape for San Remo and Gent Wevelgem, although probably not as good as last year but then after those races there wasn't much left for him to try and win.
“He got sick and then he had a break. That break has done him good and he's come back well”.
"He came here frustrated though and I've never seen someone get four second places in a week and lose two in a photo so he was really keen to get a win here and we knew he was ready", he concluded.
The Australian team is now holding the third overall spot after the stage 3 classifications. It is 20 seconds behind the leading side, Team Garmin-Barracuda.
Team BMC is holding the second spot while Team RadioShack-Nissan and Team Sky holds firm at the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
The UCI debutant side, Team Orica-GreenEdge is having a superb season and has filled its cupboard with several victories in the first half of the race.
Simon Gerrans opened the team’s winning account with his historic win at the Santos Tour Down Under and also went onto win the Milan-San Remo 2012.
Matthew currently holds the 8th overall spot after the stage 3 classifications with his team-mate Brett Lancaster holding the seventh overall spot.
If the team continues to perform in the same fashion, it is a definite favourite to climb the top podium spot after the final general classifications.
