Matt Wieters and Xavier Avery shine in Baltimore Orioles’ thrilling win – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles finally managed to get a win under their belt as they defeated the Cleveland Indians in a thrilling encounter in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The offence was the high point for the Orioles in a game that was played on an extremely competitive note. Matt Wieters displayed some top quality hitting skills as he hit a three run home-run to right in the sixth inning to help his team come back from
behind to snatch a memorable victory at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore.
The catcher is having a decent time on the plate this season and he is averaging .253 with the bat with 11 home-runs and 37 RBI’s. Credit must be given to him for leading the Orioles’ hitting attack since the start of the season. It will be interesting to
see if Wieters can bring some more consistency in his game play to improve his average.
"I got our starter knocked out in the fourth inning because of that," said Ryan Flaherty who drove in a tie breaking run. "Fortunately, we were able to rally around it and come back from it, but still that's not winning baseball."
"I was so proud of the guys tonight. They just kept grinding," Orioles’ manager Buck Showalter said in a post game interview. "They were not going to be denied."
"It was a battle," Wieters said. "We haven't been able to come out on top of those, and we really worked to get that win."
The Indians had a season high 16 hits on a steamy night with temperatures reaching 100 degrees but the Orioles continued to score runs to win only for the third time in their last ten games.
Centre-fielder Xavier Avery had his career best outing on Friday, June 29 as he hit his first Major League home-run to left in the eighth inning to lift the Orioles to a much needed victory. Orioles’ starter Jake Arrieta gave up five runs and eight hits
in just over three innings.
