Matt Wieters carries Baltimore Orioles to 10-4 win over Chicago White Sox – MLB Update
Matt Wieters went on a hitting rampage against helpless Chicago White Sox pitchers to take the Baltimore Orioles to a splendid 10-4 victory at Cellular Field, Chicago on Friday, April 29.
Wieters got no less than four RBIs to take the Orioles to a magnificent victory over the White Sox. “I probably should have taken it," Wieters admitted of the pitch responsible for his fourth homer this season. "But I was just able to put the barrel on the
ball and it took off. I could have drawn it up better. I really feel comfortable now, getting back to how I was swinging a few years ago. We're going to keep working on it and trying to get better."
However, Friday’s game began with Chicago’s offence shining, as Jake Arrieta was first charged by A.J. Pierzynski who scored a two-run homer followed by a single of Juan Pierre. The Orioles made an early return despite going down by 3-0 in the second inning.
Brian Roberts scored the first run for Orioles by hitting a single to right on John Danks’ fastball. Derrek Lee was next, as he hit a single to right to make it 3-2 for the Orioles. Luke Scott levelled the score for Baltimore in the fourth inning when the
hitter homered to right centre.
With the score standing at 3-3, the Orioles then seemed to leave everything to Wieters who was unstoppable once runs started flowing from his bat. Danks gave up his fifth run in the inning when Wieters homered to left. This took the score to 5-3 for the
Orioles. Brent Lillibridge homered to centre for a single, bringing the lead down to 5-4.
The seventh inning ushered in what could be rightly described as a stream of runs. Mark Reynolds walked to allow Nick Markakis to score the sixth run for the Orioles. Wieters was next with his seemingly effortless second two-run homer. That took the lead
to a comfortable 8-4 score, but the Orioles’ hitters did intend to stop there.
Brian Roberts doubled to deep left in the same inning to score the winning 10th run for the Orioles. Jim Johnson and Jeremy Accardo then pitched three shutout innings to secure a 10-4 victory for the Orioles against a struggling White Sox side.
It will be interesting to see how the Orioles carry their winning momentum into their next game. The White Sox put in a decent effort, but it was not enough to contain the powerful Orioles’ offence.
