Matt Wieters’ hitting impresses Buck Showalter – MLB News
Matt Wieters not only won the outing for the Baltimore Orioles but also won the respect of his manager Buck Showalter, who spoke high of the right-hand hurler after his club dropped the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2 in second outing to get back into the series.
Despite being in front of a large crowd at Camden Yards, Wieters launched his 19th home-run in a crucial time. Wieters proved the decision of Showalter to induct him in his first All-Star team this season.
"Matty has a chance to hit 20 home runs, [and] it seems like every one of them has been a big home run," Showalter said of the 25-year-old Wieters.
Showalter felt proud of Matt and explained his pleasure with his brilliant performance. Showalter commented that Matt dominated and rocked with his perfect launchings. He further added that it was also a sense of pleasure to speak about a player making improvement
to his game on regular basis.
Wieters’ hit has topped the Orioles into a win that sent the Rays into trouble in keeping their pace to compete with the American League leader. The right-hand batter piled 61 RBIs and 62 runs in his 127 games in his mere second season of the career.
Despite being a major part of the win, Matt did not limit all the appreciation to himself instead he used word “We” when talking with the reporters after the outing.
"We're just trying to play as well as we can against teams that are going to the playoffs," Wieters said. "They can fight it out and go for the playoffs. We're just going to try and get better and keep working."
He was also pointing out his fellow pitcher, starter Simon, who worked seven strong innings.
Wieters stated that if Simon generated his pace early in the game he kept it until the end and his pitching has itself explained his class.
Talking about the nine strike-outs Simon made in the outing, Wieters said. “Strike one's big for any pitcher, but it's especially big for him."
Wieters had launched nine home-runs in the games played between August and September.
