Matt Wieters shines as Baltimore Orioles beat Oakland Athletics 5-2 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles beat Oakland Athletics 5-2 at the Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on April 29 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season. Orioles seem to be learning their lessons very fast as they made the most of available opportunities on Sunday evening to secure an emphatic series victory.
The athletics were leading 2-0 at the end of the seventh and it seemed there is an upset on the cards but the Orioles had other ideas.
"In fairness to Bartolo, he pitched great," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "Even in the last inning he gives up a ground ball and then a swinging bunt. ... It certainly wasn't his fault."
Matt Wieters, who has looked in prime form since the start of the season, doubled to deep left centre and J.J. Hardy and Adam Jones combined to score the first run.
Wilson Betemit joined the part in the bottom of the ninth as he hit a three run home run to help the Orioles establish complete control over the contest.
"We got a team where everybody pulls together," Betemit said in the jubilant Orioles clubhouse. "Everybody knows how to play, knows how to win, and that's what we do."
"It's nice to finish on that note," Wieters said. "We'll enjoy it for the rest of the day and then move on to play the Yankees."
Athletics Relief Pitcher Grant Balfour took his first loss of the season after he gave up a double to Wieters that bounced off the wall. He will be looking to improve his stats on his next opportunity.
Despite making a poor start to the series, the Orioles continued to play aggressively and they outplayed the Athletics in almost all departments of the game in game two to dent their opponents’ confidence levels.
Oakland did not recover from that humiliating defeat and they made a large number of unforced errors in the final game. Baltimore took complete advantage of the situation. Handling the pressure absolutely superbly, Buck Showalter and company came back from behind to register a memorable win.
