Matt Wieters shines as Baltimore Orioles outlast Seattle Mariners 8-7 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles showed great determination and fighting spirit to edge the Seattle Mariners 8-7 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Tuesday, August 7 in second game of their three match series.
With their win on Tuesday, the Orioles have now narrowed down the gap between themselves and New York Yankees to just four games on top of American League East Division standings.
After crushing Seattle 3-1 in series opener, the Orioles continued their excellent work in Game 2 to take a decisive 2-0 series lead.
The match was played on a highly competitive note with both teams putting up a brave fight but it was Baltimore who held their nerves to prevail in the end. Adam Jones delivered the go ahead run in the 14th inning as the Orioles stunned the Mariners.
Credit should be given to Buck Showalter and his men for showing excellent bounce back abilities. Seattle got off to a flying start to take 5-0 lead in the second inning. Third baseman Kyle Seager and catcher Miguel Olivo hit home-runs to put Baltimore under
immense pressure early on.
"You know, it's not a team that's sitting there going, 'Woe is me. Let's get this over.' They grind it," manager Buck Showalter said. "They put in so much effort."
Matt Wieters brought the Orioles back into the contest as he hit two consecutive home-runs to reduce Mariners’ lead to 7-3. J.J. Hardy also played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash with a three run home-run to left in the seventh to level the
score 7-7.
"I don't know if anybody can give you an exact answer other than (we) just keep playing. There is no quit in this team. We know with our bullpen, they keep putting up zeros and eventually somebody's got to score," said Wieters in a post game interview.
Orioles’ starter Zach Britton had an ordinary time on the mound as he gave up seven runs in just five innings but relief pitcher Darren O’Day pitched two scoreless innings to grab his sixth win of the season.
