Australia’s Matt Wilkinson and America’s Cory Arrambide successfully made their way into the fourth round (Round of 24) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz after walking away with top honours from their respective
Round 3 (Round of 48) heats that went down at Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Friday, August 31.
America’s Luke Davis finished in second place during the third heat to accompany Wilkinson into the next round of the competition, whereas Australia’s Nathan Hedge and America’s Matt Pagan were forced to make a premature exit from the competition after rounding
out the bottom-two positions.
The fourth heat saw Bettero join his rival Arrambide in the next round after managing to secure second position. America’s Evan Geiselman finished in third place, while Brazil’s Rude Carvalho had to settle for fourth place. This resulted in the elimination
of both the surfers from the competition.
Some of the most promising surfing talent was in contention for the top honours at Zarautz, causing the crowd to anticipate a handful of remarkable performances as the competition progressed.
Wilkinson found himself pitted against Davis, Hedge and Pagan in a four-man battle for the Round 4 spot. The three-to-four foot waves accompanied by strong onshore winds proved a bit of challenge, but the Australian surfer adapted to the conditions exceptionally
well and managed to find himself a 7.83 and 6.40-point wave, thus finishing with a heat-total of 14.23 points.
Davis made the Round 4 cut as well after putting on an impressive performance, which featured a 6.40 and 7.63-point ride and proved adequate to put him in runner-up place.
Hedge finished in third place with a heat-total of 13.13 points, while Pagan finished behind him in fourth place after registering a two-wave total of 11.27 points.
The fourth heat featured a somewhat decent performance by Arrambide as he managed to get the better of Bettero, Geiselman and Carvalho to secure his place in the next round.
The promising American talent collected a couple of scores in the six-point range to finish with a decisive heat-total of 13.16 points.
Bettero finished well behind his rival on the score-board, registering a two-wave total of 10.83 points, but the effort turned out to be just enough to add him to the Round 4 line-up.
Geiselman finished in third place with a heat-total of 10.47 points, while Carvalho finished fourth after concluding the heat with a two-wave total of 9.80 points.
