Matt Wilkinson and Luke Davis display impressive forms in Round 3 of the Australian Open of Surfing
Australia’s Matt Wilkinson and America’s Luke Davis claimed success in Round 3 (Round of 48) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Australian Open of Surfing that went down at Manly Beach in New South Wales, Australia, on Friday, February
17.
With two-foot waves and light on-shore winds prevailing at the primary event site, the surfers put on a spectacular show to keep their heads from getting cut off.
In the ninth heat, the in-form Wilkinson put his local knowledge of the waves to use and posted a winning heat-total of 14.43 points on the score-board. The two-wave total, which comprised of a 5.93 and an impressive 8.50-point wave, served to earn him a
comfortable victory over his rivals in the four-man battle and earned him a place in Round 4 (Round of 24).
Another local talent Nicholas Squires successfully extended his life in the event as well after earning a 7.33 off his first wave and soon backing it up with a 6.50-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 13.83 points and consequently secure runner-up
place.
Peruvian Cristobal De Col finished third with a heat-total of 9.07 points, while New Zealand’s Matt-Lewis Hewitt rounded out the bottom-position with a two-wave total of 7.77 points. The lacklustre performance by the two surfers resulted in their elimination
from the competition.
In the 10th heat, Davis took a comfortable victory over his competitors after scoring a 7.83 off his first business-wave and soon adding an additional 7.10 to his account for a resultant heat-total of 14.93 points. With the win, the American surfer
advanced through into the next round.
Brazil’s Peterson Crisanto survived the third round as well after adding a 4.33 to his account and later backing it up with an outstanding 9.33-point wave to finish in runner-up place with a heat-total of 13.66 points.
Australia’s Dion Atkinson finished third with a heat-total of 11.90 points, while America’s Taylor Thorne apparently succumbed to the demanding conditions at Manly Beach and finished with a heat-total of mere 4.54 points. Both the surfers got removed from
the contention for the event title.
The surfing action continued at the Many Beach with the remaining heats of Australian Open of Surfing’s Round 3.
