Matt Young called up by Detroit Tigers – MLB Update
According to a leading sports website, Detroit Tigers have called up outfielder Matt Young from Triple A Toledo. Tigers made this move after outfielder Andy Dirks was placed on a 15 day disabled list. The source further told that Dirks has tendinitis in
right Achilles and he may need more than 15 days to recover.
Dirks was having a decent season with a .328 average and he will be eligible for activation on June 14. Young, who played for Atlanta Braves last season, will be looking to cement his place on Tigers’ big league roster.
Ramon Santiago was the only Tiger available on the bench before Manager Jim Leyland decided to bring in Young. Tigers are facing tough times these days. The Disabled list is crowded with the likes of Austin Jackson, Gerald Laird and Alex Avila.
Jackson was placed on the DH list due to severe abdominal strain. Both Avila and Laird are having hamstring problems. Left hander Daniel Schlereth was also put on a 60 day disabled list with tendinitis in his left shoulder.
"It's exciting to be here ... to get back. Coming to this organization, it was one of those things where they're pretty set up here. Knowing I was going to Toledo and do what I could to get up here and help these guys win. It has been a good weekend. I made
the Braves Opening Day and got sent down and got back up about this time last year.''
"I'm not joking; he's a good athlete, and if we had went into extra innings I thought about it,'' said Leyland. "When you have a one-player bench, you think about these things.''
Young gave decent results for Mud Hens; Tigers double A affiliate. He averaged .259 with one home run and 16 RBI’s. However, his main purpose will be to provide Tigers with more depth and solidity in the outfield.
In an interview, Young revealed that he got the call from Toledo Manager Phil Nevin on Sunday morning. It will be interesting to see if he can make the most of on hand opportunities make a name for himself.
