Mattek-Sands/Mirza outplay Rosolska/Zheng to clinch the doubles title – Brussels Open 2012
Seeded at number four in the tournament draw, the American-Indian tandem of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sania Mirza stood tall in the final of the Brussels Open on Saturday to be declared as the champions. They outsmarted the third
seed pair of Alicja Rosolska from Poland and Jie Zheng of China in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, in the title round clash of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International Tour event in Brussels, Belgium.
It was a relatively one-sided affair, with Mattek-Sands and Mirza dominating for most of the time. The fourth seeded duo displayed their amazing coordination and pin-point hitting to turn the tables on the superior seeded opponents.
They bettered Rosolska and Zheng in every segment of the game and clinched their first doubles title as a team in the current season.
Winning the toss, Mattek-Sands and Mirza served first in the match and were stunned to suffer a blow straight away to fall to a 0-2 deficit. Rosolska and Zheng couldn’t hold on to their early advantage and dropped their serve in
the fourth game to fall back at 2-2. It proved to be the turning point of the set as the American-Indian duo shifted gears from there onwards. A cracking break of serve in the eighth game proved decisive in the opener, as Mattek-Sands and Mirza closed out
the set number one at 6-3.
Mattek-Sands and Mirza went into the following set with their all guns blazing and nailed two successive break points to race away to a 4-0 lead right away. Rosolska and Zheng then held their remaining serves but couldn’t curtail
the score deficit until the conclusion of the match. Mattek-Sands and Mirza served out of the match comprehensively, finishing their championship victory at 6-2.
The fourth seed tandem delivered 60 per cent first serve on target and dropped just 10 points on it, winning 21 out of 31 points en route to victory. Mattek-Sands and Mirza crafted a total of five break opportunities and converted
four of them en route to victory. The third seed opponents frittered away two vital break points in the match and registered merely one to finish on the losing side.
