Matteo Manassero eyes major charge at US Open – Golf news
Matteo Manassero, who turned 20 earlier this April, is set to be featured in the second major golf championship of the season, the US Open, when he tees of this week at the Merion Golf Club, on Thursday, June 13, 2013.
Manassero, who is enjoying a flourishing career during his teenage – he won three European Tour events as a teenager – is being lauded as one of the strongest additions to the event this season.
Three weeks ago, he became the youngest winner of the European Tour’s flagship event, BMW PGA Championship, and is now confident to repeat the heroics of the Wentworth Club at this week’s prestigious event.
Talking to the reporters during his media session on Wednesday, he said that his experience of holding off some of the best players in the world, including 11 members of the winning European Ryder Cup team, greatly boosted his morale ahead of his third consecutive
US Open appearance.
“Winning the BMW PGA has given me a big lift,” he said. “I wasn’t playing that well, but it was such a special week and ended a great week. It was the flagship event so Wentworth always has something special and, to me, winning our main event meant a lot.
It had such a strong field this year with all the Ryder Cup players, and it was a great title to win ahead of coming here.”
“I am really looking forward to this week, of course …the way I have played the last three weeks has been great,” he added.
He is also hoping that his accuracy in the game will play a key role this week at a venue that is just 6,996 yards long, and is the shortest venue for the US Open in the last 10 years.
According to him, it will be crucial for every player to play well off the tee, in a bid to create birdie chances, or else, it will become really difficult for them to even think of contending for the top spot in the event.
Also, the lack of bounce at the course – it rained heavily last weekend – will also require to players to focus on accuracy, rather than gaining distances.
