Matteo Manassero in the lead at Maybank Malaysian Open 2011 – Golf news
Italian rookie Matteo Manassero is in the lead after teeing off from the front-nine of the Maybank Malaysian Open 2011 golf tournament.
The final round of the European Tour event is being held at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club.
The 17-year-old Italian birdied the second hole on the front and left rest of the holes for par. However, on his way to the closing holes, he aced the opening hole which strengthened his chances on the lead. He hit a crisp iron shot on the 11th
fairway and celebrated his success for reaching the green safely.
On the 12th green, the rookie missed the par-putt, which ruined his scorecard with the first bogey of the day. Manassero has dropped only five shots so far, which shows the accuracy in his game plan.
The Italian has two more holes to play and is only a few steps away from his second European Tour title.
One stroke behind him is a duo comprising of Gregory Bourdy and Rory McIlroy. Bourdy has completed his 72 holes with an aggregate of 15-under par after reeling eight birdies in the day. Meanwhile, McIlroy is catching up on the leader with seven birdies and
two bogeys. He has one more hole left to end the tournament as a winner.
Seven strokes behind him is the 2011 Masters winner Charl Schwartzel. The South African teed off from the back and birdied the opening hole to get into momentum. He birdied two more with two bogeys and capped the first half with a score of 1-under par.
Currently, he is working his way to the front-nine and has picked two birdies. He has two holes left and chances are that he will finish in the top players.
Meanwhile, Thai golfer Thongchai Jaidee is eleven strokes behind the leader. He has completed the back-nine holes from where he chose to tee and picked three birdies against three bogeys. His best was seen at the 14th hole, when he recovered a
lost ball from the bunker and nailed it for a par.
