Matteo Manassero part of the field at JB Were Masters in Australia
Young Italian star Matteo Manassero will be joining the star-studded field at the JB Were Masters in Australia this month alongside world number one Luke Donald, number 17 Ian Poulter and defending champion Stuart Appleby. The event, also known as the Australian
Masters, is being continuously staged for more than a 100 years and is often regarded as the major championship for the rest of the world.
David Rollo, Vice President – Director of Golf IMG Australia said, “We are delighted that Matteo has included the JBWere Masters in his 2011 schedule and his achievements to date are remarkable. We look forward to announcing further players in the weeks
ahead but as in previous years, we have maintained an affordable and accessible ticketing policy with daily tickets to the JBWere Masters still under $50.”
Manassero is coming right out of PGA Championship finishing for a joint 37th, posting an aggregate of three-over on the weekend. He started off his PGA Championship bid with an impressive two-under on the difficult Firestone Golf and Country Club
but slumped to high scoring rounds of 74 and 71 on the proceeding days. He pulled in a final round of 70 on Sunday to finish down the leaderboard.
The 18-year-old is currently ranked 30th in the OWGR and has won Malaysian Maybank Open on the European tour for the season. He is one of the trailblazing golfers who have won laurels for his country despite of his young age. He became the youngest
player ever to win a title on the European Tour when he lifted the Castello Masters in October 2010 at the age of 17 years and 188 days. But this is not the end of the list for his achievements at a tender age.
He became the youngest winner of the Amateur Championship in June 2009 and qualified for the Open Championship playing as a low Amateur. He became the youngest player ever to make the cut in his bid for the Masters in 2010.
Manassero will be visiting the Aussie turf for the first time hoping to translate his European Tour success here on the red planet.
“I have heard many great things about the Melbourne sandbelt and I am really excited about the opportunity to play in Australia,” he said in an interview.
The JB Were Masters is one of the most coveted title events played on the Australian courses and the tour officials are also pushing for a slot as the fifth major of the sport. The timings of the event also considerably suit the rest of the calendar on both
PGA Tour as well as the European Tour, just ahead of the Dubai World Golf Championship which marks the culminating event of the year
