Matteo Manassero wins the Barclays Singapore Open
Matteo Manassero claimed the third European Tour title of his career after the Italian soared to a playoff victory at the Barclays Singapore Open. Thanks to a sparkling eagle putt on the third extra hole in the playoffs, he secured the coveted trophy.
The US$6 million tournament was being played at the Sentosa Golf Club, featuring some of the prominent names on the Asian Tour and the European Tour.
On Saturday, the heavy rains and thunderstorms did not allow the players to complete their third-round campaigns.
As a result, the game resumed on Sunday, when Manassero completed his third round with a seven-under par 64 to secure a two-shot lead.
He then birdied the second and the fourth hole to reach the turn in two-under, in the final round. Thereafter, he conceded a bogey on the 15th hole but he offset that with a birdie on the 18th hole.
In the meantime, Louis Oosthuizen posted a four-under par 67 in the final round to surge to the top of the leaderboard.
At the end of the four rounds, both the players were tied for the first position with a 13-under par overall score.
As a result, the game entered the sudden-death playoffs, where both carded birdies on the first extra hole. The playoffs then extended to the third hole, after Oosthuizen and Manassero parred the second extra hole.
At the third hole, both the players found the fairway and green on their first and the second shot, respectively.
After Oosthuizen missed a long eagle putt, Manassero took advantage of the situation and rolled in the ball to take home his first title of the season.
“It’s been an extremely long day,” said Manassero. “The adrenaline kept me going and the key was starting really well this morning. Starting with some birdies gave me a lot of adrenaline to go forward”.
He added, “The play-off was just a great honour to play with Louis - it’s been amazing really. This year has been a tough year for me going through a few swing changes, but it has been amazing this week. I’m glad this came in such a great tournament”.
