Matteo Marrai upsets Paul Capdeville in the first round – Seguros Bolivar Open 2011
World number 366, unseeded Matteo Marrai of Italy upset world number 108, third seed Paul Capdeville of Chile in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round at the Seguros Bolivar Open in Bogota, Colombia on Monday. The Italian
needed just an hour and twelve minutes to undo his opponent in a one-sided contest.
Capdeville took an early lead as he broke the Italian in the second game to go ahead 2-0 but the Chilean failed to consolidate on it, getting broken in the very next game and losing the fourth game to square off the score at 2-2.
Marrai broke again in the seventh game and the Italian capitalised on the break of serve, serving out the set at 5-4.
Marrai delivered two aces and 60 percent of the first serves, capturing 80 percent of the points on them in the first set. In comparison, Capdeville almost managed a similar performance as he hit the same number of aces and 61
percent of the first serves. However, the Chilean lagged far behind in the conversion rate as he succeeded in converting just 57 percent of the first serves into points in comparison to a whopping 80 percent by his opponent. The 28-year-old had a disappointing
first return performance as he won just 20 percent of the points on them in response to 43 percent by his opponent. Capdeville converted the only break point he received on Marrai’s serve but failed to save two of the three break points on his own serve in
the opening set.
In the second set, Marrai took the lead straightaway as he broke the Chilean in the opening game and held his next service game to grab a 2-0 lead. The Italian and Capdeville held their serve in the next six games to take the score
to 5-3 in favour of the former. Serving to stay in the set at 3-5, the Chilean could not hold his serve and lost the set 3-6.
Marrai kept his first serve percentage at 58 percent and did not hit any ace in the second set. The Italian kept on winning first return points on crucial moments, converting an incredible 40 percent of the first returns into points.
The 24-year-old capitalised on two of the five break point opportunities he created on Capdeville’s serve and saved the only break point he faced on his own serve in the second set.
The Italian is drawn to face Argentinean Facundo Arguello, ranked 260th in the world, in the second round. Arguello defeated world number 352 Eduardo Struvay of Colombia in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 in the first round.
