Matteo Trevisan defeats Antonio Veic in the first round of the Tennis Napoli Cup
Wildcard entrant Matteo Trevisan from Italy won his opening round clash against the 23-year-old Antonio Veic of Croatia at the Tennis Napoli Cup at Naples, Italy on Monday noon. It took two hours for the Italian to overcome his
opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 and advance to the second round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event.
The 21-year-old Italian cruised through the contest without any serious challenged posed by his opponent. Trevisan was aggressive in his approach and backed it up with a rock solid baseline defence. He saved seven out of eight
break points he faced from Veic and struck three serve breaks en route to victory.
Trevisan delivered almost 70 per cent of his first serve on target and nabbed 35 of 49 points on it to get the competitive advantage over his opponent. The Italian had a tight check over his unforced errors and took advantage of
most of the opportunities he got in the game. Veic got his chances in the contest but the Croat frittered them away carelessly and ended on the losing side.
The opener took off with some brilliant power hitting from the two contestants. Trevisan’s quality ground strokes were elegantly met by his opponent, who used his forehand to perfection. Plenty of winners were exchanged between
the two competitors and a routine game took the scores to 4-3, with the Italian leading. Trevisan served with 64 per cent exactness, with the Croat firing 68 per cent first serve on target.
A forehand from Veic landed long of the baseline, bestowing the first serve break of the match to his opponent at 5-3. The Italian made the best of this opportunity and served out of the first set comprehensively at 6-3, leading
the match up 1-0.
Veic’s game down sloped in the following set, as he could deliver just 56 per cent of his first serve on target. He dropped his serve once before he registered his first break point of the contest in the fifth game. The Italian
reeled of 17 of 26 total serve points in the second with his 77 per cent accurate serve and kept building pressure upon his opponent by his aggressive game play. A second serve break from Trevisan proved decisive for him as he closed out victory at 6-4 and
stepped into the second round of the Tennis Napoli Cup.
Trevisan will be taking on either of the two Spaniards, Daniel Munoz-De La Nava and Guillermo Alcaide, in the second round at Naples. The Spanish players will compete against each other on Tuesday noon and the winner will square
off against Trevisan.
