Matteo Viola gobsmacks Rogerio Dutra Da Silva in 2nd round – Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011
Italian Matteo Viola surmounted third seeded Brazilian Rogerio Dutra Da Silva in the second round of the Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011.
On Wednesday the 23rd of November 2011, the two rivals took up racquets against each other on the classic clay courts of the Guayaquil Tennis Club in Guayaquil, Ecuador and after one hour and twenty nine minutes the Italian gobsmacked the third seeded Brazilian by whipping him in straight sets of 6-4, 6-3.
This was the first meeting between the two and opening the first set of the match was Viola but he double faulted on his primary serve and he got off to a bad start. Mean while, the third seeded Brazilian scooped two successive games and was first to take the mini lead on the scoreboard.
On the contrary, Viola made a return with a hold of serve in the third game and then by benefitting from a breakpoint in the fourth game, he managed to not only reduce the deficit but also equalized the score at two games each. Subsequently, in the following four games the players held their respective serves and the score tied for the last time at four games each by the end of the eighth game.
It was in the ninth game that Viola smashed a spectacular backhand winner and then capitalized on a breakpoint to secure the opening round with a 6-4 victory.
Initiating the second round was Silva and he got off to a bad start as he was unable to hold his respective serve. Mean while, Viola capitalized on the breakpoint and then held his serve to take a mini lead of two games to love. It was in the third game that Silva held his serve for the first time.
From there onwards both the players kept bagging their respective serves for the following four games and at the end of the seventh game the score had shifted to 4-3 with Viola leading the game. Although, Silva reduced the deficit to 3-4, he was unable to equalize the score and eventually lost the set.
In the eighth game Viola hit an ace to clog his service game and was now only a game away from victory. As the pressure built up, Silva’s forehand went wayward and he gifted the set to Viola in the ninth game.
The Italian was able to seal his victory and secured a spot in the quarterfinal of the event where he will be facing Argentinean Andres Molteni.
