Italian Matteo Viola surmounted Argentinean Andres Molteni in the quarterfinal of the Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011.
On Thursday the 24th of November 2011, at the Guayaquil Tennis Club in Guayaquil, Ecuador both the competitors took up the gauntlet on clay courts. After one hour and fifty eight minutes the Italian player overpowered the Argentinean
challenger in straight sets of 6-4, 6-4.
Viola served first and he smashed a beautiful forehand winner to clog the opening game of the primary round. He then capitalized on a break in the second game and with a hold of serve tactfully reeled off three games to take a
mini lead of three games to love on the scoreboard. It was in the fourth game that Molteni made a return with a hold of serve and he then broke his adversary to reduce the deficit to 2-3.
During the fifth and the sixth games the players traded in breaks and the score had shifted to 4-2 with Viola leading the set. Subsequently, in a reversal of fate Molteni made a return by reducing the deficit to 3-4 with a hold
of serve and he further completely eradicated the deficit in the next game with a hold of serve.
At the end of the eighth game the score had equalized at four games each. As Viola held his serve for the last time in the set, he was now only a game away from bagging the primary round. The pressure was building and Viola got
the desired break in the tenth game to bag the opening round with a 6-4 victory.
Molteni inaugurated the second set and this time both the players held their respective serves to place themselves on the score at 1-1. However, Molteni took the lead with a hold of serve and then by capitalizing on breakpoint
to take two games. Nonetheless, Viola also made a return by breaking back and reduced the lead to 2-3 by the end of the fifth game. With a hold of serve in the sixth game, Viola completely finished the lead and tied the score at three games each.
Subsequently, in the following two games the players once more traded in breaks and the score tied at four games each by the end of the eighth game. However, in the ninth game Viola capitalized on a pivotal break and then held
his serve for the last time to clog the second set as well.
Next up for the Italian is Portuguese qualifier Pedro Sousa in the semi final of the event.
