Troy Matteson continues his good run of form
After day two ended at the TPC Deere Run, the leaderboard looked pretty interesting. The competition is getting tougher and tougher as John Deere Classic moves on, although Troy Matteson still holds the lead but it is a slender one.
Troy Matteson could not repeat his last night’s performance but he still holds a one-shot lead over Jeff Maggert and Brian Harman. Troy shot a three-under par 68 to remain at the first spot.
Steve Stricker, looking to make a record for himself by becoming the fifth man in history to win a tournament for four years in a row, is not that far behind. He still has very good chances going into the weekend.
Jeff Maggert was not initially playing in John Deere Classic. He made a last minute decision to enter into the tournament. So far, his decision has worked out perfectly. He is in contention for the title, going into the next two rounds.
On the second day, there was a 48-minute delay as thunderstorm disrupted the play, but they never looked back again.
Brian Harman shot a second straight 65 to remain at the second spot. Harman scored 7 birdies in his second round.
Jeff had a flawless second round, which saw him move from the 39th place to the second position after round two. He shot a 9-under 62, which included five birdies on the last nine holes he played.
Maggert’s putting was pretty sublime which probably made the difference. "I saw the putts better today," Maggert said.
"But I am going to be aggressive tomorrow. I feel I need another really low round Saturday or Sunday, 7- or 8-under, to be in contention. The last few years, guys have really been lighting it up here".
Troy Matteson was pretty pleased with his second round performance. He said that if somebody has given him this score for round two, he would have surely taken it. Matteson is in pretty good form, however, he just had one bogey this time around.
"I am fairly pleased," Matteson said. "I was apprehensive coming in. It is always tough to come to a golf course the day after a low round, You envision yourself playing the same way you did the day before, but the pins are different, and the course is different."
Zach Johnson, tipped to win the John Deere Classic, is not far behind. He is sitting at 9-under after the first two rounds.
