Matthew Baldwin keeps the title chase on at the BMW International Open – Golf News
Matthew Baldwin of England maintained consistency in his game on day two of the BMW International Open, to post another good round of 69 and share the second spot on the leaderboard, on Friday, June 21, 2013.
The BMW International Open is sanctioned by the European Tour, the only event this season being staged in Germany.
Right from the beginning of the tournament, Baldwin has shown class in his game by creating a number of birdie chances over the first 36 holes that he has played so far.
The opening round witnessed him draining eight birdie putts, without conceding a single bogey. On day two, he kept the momentum going and added another four shots to his scorecard on the outward nine.
The back nine of the course witnessed him slowing down a bit, as he parred eight holes, while suffering his first and only bogey, so far, of the tournament on the 16th hole.
At the end of the day, he found himself settling for an 11-under par two-round score, just one stroke behind the pace set by South African veteran star Ernie Els.
“Just to stay patient and self talk is a big point for me,” he revealed. “I sometimes get down on myself, so stay positive and stay patient.”
The qualifying graduate Alexander Levy, in the meantime, carded seven birdies while losing three shots to stand beside Baldwin on the leaderboard.
So far in his rookie season on the European Tour, Levy has to finish better than 10th in any tournament. Yet, the 22-year-old Frenchman is confident to chase down the reigning Open champion on top of the leaderboard.
“I'm very happy to play this one today,” he said. “I missed a few shots off the tee but I take a good time on the course and I played very, very well today and I'm very happy. I stayed very patient, because two weeks ago, I played
well in Austria, but the second round I missed a few shots and I didn't play very well the second round, and today I'm very happy to play well today.
Danny Willett also remained in contention for successfully defending his title at the Golfclub München Eichenried, he carded a 65 to accumulate a 10-under par halfway score and share the fourth spot on the leaderboard.
