Matthew Belcher and Malcolm Page retain overall lead of 2012 470 World Championships
Participants of the 2012 470 World Championship did not have a great start to the regatta as the weather did not seem favourable because of a lack of wind on the first day of the event. However, despite the forecast, Australia’s Matthew Belcher and Malcolm
Page sailed well to win the only race of Day 1 and grab the top podium place to get a leading position in the standings.
The former two-time World Champions had a superb start of Day 2 under ideal wind conditions that did not create any disturbance during their run. The Aussie pair retained their 470 World Championship lead after adding three more bullets into the fleet standings.
The duo did not shake at all and kept their top performance from the start of the proceedings.
Belcher spoke to the media that compiling such performance is important to get these kinds of results at a World Championship. They are happy to have a bit of wind on the second day of the regatta and the way they sailed put a lot of boost in their performance.
The pair is now aiming to keep their good form intact and extend their lead until the end of the regatta.
The second place team on Day 1, Greece’s Panagiotis Mantis and Pavlos Kagialis were not able to maintain their form and with 2, 6, 4 at the end of the second day, they finished fifth on the podium. A superb comeback from Alvaro Marinho and Miguel Nunes Portugal
brought them to second place with 10 points.
