Matthew Busche wins 2011 USA Cycling Professional Road Championships: Cycling News
RadioShack team’s Matthew Busche showed his tremendous performance in 2011 USA Cycling Professional Road Championships in Greenville on Sunday, May 30.
The 26-year-old Matthew Busche took a total of 4 hours, 28 minutes and 2 seconds to cover a distance of 185 kilometres.
George Hincapie was in second place with the same timing of Matthew. Ted King bagged the third place with a difference of 2 seconds ahead of Tejay Van of HTC-Highroad in the fourth spot.
After winning the road race, Busche told the media, "I've never sprinted on this level before, I'm not usually the sprinter, but today it wasn't really a sprint, it was more of a drag race. It came down to a bike throw and I guess I got the first wheel."
In the beginning of race, a six-man break-away worked together over the top of the 3.5 kilometres decisive ascent. They took an advantage of total of eight to nine minutes over the peloton.
In the second large lap, a group of eight riders including, Quinn Keogh, David Williams, Jason McCartney, Brent Bookwalter, Jesse Anthony, Phil Gaimon, Tim Duggan and Robert Bush got away.
Before the second climb, all of them gained an advantage of 45 seconds. Williams and Bush were dropped from the race. However, the other six riders continue the race and took a lead of 2 minutes and 40 seconds at the half-way point.
On the third lap, the four riders, McCartney, Duggan, Jesse Anthony and Bookwalter took lead when Quinn and Gaimon drove the pace on the Paris Mountain. They gained advantage of two minutes when one large gap and three small circuits were remaining in the race.
In the final three finishing circuit, a group of four riders including Busche, Hincapie, Ted King and Tejay Van caught the breakaway riders. Hincapie was in good form and managed to take the lead, but Busche paced his speed and crossed the finish-line, ahead of Hincapie and King.
Hincapie said, "We worked together well but the strongest guys were in it at the end, everyone was working because we were all pulling and going full gas. No one started sitting on during the three circuits. It was too fast to attack. I put myself in the best position to win but unfortunately lost by a photo finish."
Kyle Wamsley of the Bissell Cycling team came in fifth place with a difference of 1 minute and 29 seconds.
