Matthew Cowdrey snares Men’s 100m backstroke gold – 2012 Paralympic Games
Matthew Cowdrey of Australia snared gold medal of the Men’s 100m backstroke in S9 category on second day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Paralympic Games in Aquatics Centre on Friday, August 31.
Cowdrey served notice of his talent in the double lap backstroke discipline as he crushed hopes of his challengers and stepped on the victory stand for gold medal.
With his continuous efforts, Cowdrey remained in a lead of one and a half body length over his following swimmer and touched the wall for gold medal with a timing of 1 minute and 02.39 seconds.
The champion was chased by James Crisp of Great Britain, who remained 1.23 seconds slower from overwhelming Cowdrey and finished his race in a time of 1 minute and 03.62 seconds for silver medal.
Crisp was traced by Xiaobing Liu of China, who proved his mettle for third fastest spot of the event by submitting a time of 1 minute and 03.73 seconds.
Fourth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Michael Auprince of Australia, who stayed 0.25 seconds slower from securing third position and hit the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 03.98 seconds.
Auprince was chased by Morgyn Peters of Great Britain, stayed 0.81 seconds apart and occupied fifth position of the event by submitting a time of 1 minute and 04.79 seconds.
Similarly, Peters was traced by Tamas Toth of Hungary, who stayed half body length behind and reported an effort of 1 minute and 05.30 seconds.
Seventh finest spot of the swim was secured by Toth’s teammate, Tamas Sors, who was just 0.01 seconds away and emerged on the wall with a timing of 1 minute and 05.31 seconds.
Sors was followed by Laurence McGivern of Ireland, who was 0.80 seconds behind his foregoing finisher and tapped the wall for eighth position with a timing of 1 minute and 06.11 seconds.
Cowdrey received huge appreciation from the audience for his gruelling efforts in the backstroke discipline and expressed his desire of continuing the same in forthcoming events. Furthermore, Cowdrey collected his accolade at the victory ceremony of the
event.
