Matthew Cowdrey wins Men’s 200m IM gold – 2012 Paralympic Games
Matthew Cowdrey of Australia won gold medal of the Men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) in SM9 class on day eight of the swimming events at the 2012 London Paralympic Games in Aquatics Centre on Thursday, September 6.
Cowdrey demonstrated his stupendous efforts in the four-lap IM event and earned his way to the podium for gold medal. He remained comfortably ahead of his opponents from the start and proved his mettle for first position.
With his unrelenting efforts, Cowdrey stayed half body length ahead of his strongest challenger and touched the wall with a timing of 2 minutes and 15.95 seconds for the crown.
His laudable effort was followed by Andriy Kalyna of Ukraine, who was 0.43 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and stepped on the victory stand for second position by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 16.38 seconds.
The silver medallist was followed by Federico Morlacchi of Italy, who stayed nearly four body lengths behind and finished third in the race by producing a time of 2 minutes and 20.28 seconds.
Fourth position of the race was obtained by Tamas Toth of Hungary, who tried hard to overwhelm his former finisher but suffered a loss of nearly 0.80 seconds and ended fourth with a timing of 2 minutes and 21.04 seconds.
Toth was chased by James Crisp of Great Britain, who stayed was only 0.06 seconds apart and completed his race in fifth best place by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 21.10 seconds.
Sixth spot of the race was secured by Brenden Hall of Australia, who was 0.38 seconds slower from his preceding swimmer and emerged on the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 21.48 seconds.
Hall was followed by Cody Bureau of USA, who remained prominent for seventh position of the event and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 22.24 seconds.
Bureau was traced by Iurii Martynov of Ukraine, who concluded his race in eighth best place by reporting a time of 2 minutes and 26.65 seconds.
Furthermore, Cowdrey was overjoyed with his gold finish in the event and collected medal after the event.
