Matthew Ebden likely to feature in Australia’s Davis Cup squad – Tennis News
Aussie tennis star, Matthew Ebden, hinted at a possible Davis Cup appearance after an impressive performance in 2012. He was contacted by the captain of the Australia’s Davis Cup team, Pat Rafter, on Thursday. He was told that
he might be a lucky member of the Australia’s elite squad that will contest against China in February.
Ebden started his new season in Brisbane International tournament against the sixth seed Radek Stepanek. He lost the match but put up an exciting fight that prolonged the match into three sets. He moved on to play in the Apia Sydney
International as a wildcard entrant and ousted the seventh seed Spaniard, Marcel Granollers, in an impressive three-set battle. Another mind-startling performance came in the next round of the tournament when he fought extremely hard against the Cypriot tennis
ace, Marcos Baghdatis before losing to him; epic three-setter ended with final scores of 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(3) in favour of the Cypriot.
The most dominating performance from the Aussie came in the first round of the Australian Open tournament when he pounded the 105th ranked Brazilian, Joao Souza, in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(1), 6-2. He was also very inspiring
against the 24th ranked Japanese, Kei Nishikori, in the second round of the Grand Slam tournament; battling it out in a gruelling five-setter. He lost the contest but his performance caught eye of the Davis Cup team selectors and now he is close
to represent his country at the Davis Cup tie against China in Geelong.
Two other heavy weights of Australian tennis, Lleyton Hewitt and Bernard Tomic, are also announced to be the part of the team that will feature Matthew Ebden as well. Delighted to know that he will be representing his country with
some greats of Aussie tennis, he said, “Bernie and I have shown really good signs in the past year or so and proving where we can be in world tennis. To follow in the likes of Lleyton's success and his passion for playing for his country; we want to become
really great players and lead our country in Davis Cup matches and know that we can win against the top players in the world.”
He was very excited about the advancements that are being made to the Davis Cup team of Australia and stated, “The state of our tennis and Davis Cup team is strong and confident and it's exciting." The squad will be finalized and
announced by next week. It will be entertaining to watch the 24-years-old in action against Chinese stars.
