Matthew Ebden wins against Daniel Cox at the second round of Trofeo Paolo Corazzi
Scot Daniel Cox’s hopes fizzled away pretty quickly when he was defeated at the hands of the 184th ranked Australian, Matthew Ebden in the second round of the Trofeo Paolo Corazzi here today.
The tournament is the part of ATP (Association of tennis Professionals) Challenger tour and is being played at the Centro Sprotivo Stradivari in Cremona, Italy.
The Australian pro moved into the quarterfinal with a clinical straight sets win over Cox, who collapsed in a heap after missing too many chances in the first set. The 23-year-old Ebden was very patient throughout the set, receiving
lots of balls back into play and waiting for the error from his 20-year-old opponent. Ebden converted 100 percent breakpoints en route to the second set.
Ebden fired three aces and 77 percent of first serve, winning a whopping 88 percent behind them. In comparison, his opponent lagged behind with huge difference of 38 percent as he only managed to earn 50 percent on them. Moreover,
he could not save his break point opportunities on time and lost the first set with a 2-6 score line.
The Australian pro was in excellent form with some wonderful shot making and gusty play. He put in top quality performance to ensure his berth in the quarterfinal of the tournament. No doubt the Scot pro started the match on a
positive note and had his chances, but he remained unable to convert them on time and wallowed in miserable defeat.
A stiff contest was observed in the beginning of the second set, but Scot’s confidence evaporated as he continued to perform badly in the second set as well. The crafty Austrian shifted his gears and reeled off four consecutive
games, breaking Cox in the ninth game, to take the final set at 7-5.
Ebden concluded his victory in straight sets, with 62 percent of points on his service, 47 percent of points on return and 56 percent of points in total. In comparison, Cox was sent home with 53 percent on service, 38 percent on
return and 44 percent in total.
Ebden has successfully reached the quarterfinal of the tournament, where he will face either Italy’s Andrea Arnaboldi or France’s Ludovic Walter.
