Matthew Goss delighted after being picked up for the Tour de France
Matthew Goss of Team Orica-GreenEdge has been selected by the Australian side, Team Orica GreenEdge for the biggest cycling circus of the year, the Tour de France 2012.
Goss rode perfectly in the current season and has shown good form with stage victories at the Giro d’Italia and the Tirreno-Adriatico.
The cyclist secured the first overall spot at the Tour of Turkey point’s classifications and is all set to show his brilliance at the 2012 version of the French Grand Tour.
The 25-year-old joined Team Orica-GreenEdge in 2012 after marking his professional debut with Team CSC in 2007.
He stayed with the side by the end of 2009 season and penned a deal with Team HTC-Columbia for 2010-11 seasons.
Team Sports Director Matt White briefed that it was pretty difficult to finalise the final ninth cyclist and they have decided to go with Goss after a lot of consideration.
White cited, "It was difficult to select the final nine".
"We have more than nine riders that are ready for the Tour de France”.
It's a good problem to have. When picking the team, we have to identify the team goals and pick the best riders to achieve those goals over the three weeks”.
“I'm confident with the selection we've made that we can meet the objectives we set for July".
“We have a lot of opportunists in the team of nine. We've said from the start that the overall is not a goal”.
Matt noted that Goss is having his career’s best season and his aggressive cycling style can really help the team at the race.
He cited that Matthew has been assigned certain goals for the race and will be given his own chances to grab stages at the contest.
Stuart O’Grady is undoubtedly the senior cyclist in the side and will be marking his sixteenth appearance at the French Grand Tour.
He will lead the Australian side at it’s debut Tour de France appearance and is the side is pretty much counting on Stuart to make it happen during the three-week race.
The full Tour de France squad for the Australian team include, Michael Albasini, Baden Cooke, Simon Gerrans, Matthew Harley Goss, Daryl Impey, Brett Lancaster, Sebastian Langeveld, Stuart O'Grady and Pieter Weening.
