Matthew Goss eyeing the Tour de France as his career’s biggest goal
Matthew Goss of Team Orica-GreenEdge is eyeing the sprinting stages at the coming most prestigious cycling race of the year, the Tour de France 2012.
The cyclist is targeting the 2012 Olympic Games as the biggest goal of his 2012 season and is optimistic to find the right form during the three-week race.
The Tour de France is only a step on a ladder that will help the Australian moving towards his real goal of the season.
"It's a tricky one you know," Goss briefed to Cyclingnews.
"There's only six days after the Tour but I definitely plan to finish the Tour at this stage and then go over to London”.
Goss noted that almost 85 % of the cyclists riding the Tour will also ride the Olympics but there are only a few who are riding it mainly to prepare for the London event.
"80-85% of guys who race the Tour will be racing the Olympics but only a handful of guys will train specifically for it so a lot of us are going to be in the same boat”.
“It's probably going to be pretty painful for the first 100kms but the last part shouldn't be too bad."
The 25-year-old automatically qualifies for the Olympics race and will represent the five-man Australian road team at the contest.
He currently hold a Giro d’Italia stage 3 victory, a stage 1 win at the Tirreno-Adriatico and a point’s classification win at the Tour of Turkey 2012.
Goss is known for his sprinting skills and is expected to challenge Mark at the French Grand Tour.
"There has been a lot of talk about me and Cav against each other but at the end of the day, I'm not just going to follow Cav around and try and beat him in a sprint," Matt continued.
Team Orica-GreenEdge is marking its first appearance at the Tour de France and it is optimistic to produce the best results during the event.
The Australian team’s squad for the coming race include, Michael Albasini (Swi), Baden Cooke (Aus), Allan Davis (Aus), Simon Gerrans (Aus), Matthew Harley Goss (Aus), Daryl Impey (RSA), Brett Lancaster (Aus), Sebastian Langeveld (Ned), Cameron Meyer (Aus),
Stuart O'Grady (Aus), Tomas Vaitkus (Ltu) and Team Pieter Weening (Ned).
