Matthew Grevers clinches Men’s 100m backstroke gold - FINA Swimming Championships (25m)
Matthew Grevers of USA clinched gold medal of the Men’s 100m breaststroke on second day of the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) at Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey, on Thursday, December 13.
Grevers, who is the Olympic champion of the backstroke discipline, showered his expertise in the Short Course format as he upset his opponents by securing the title.
He qualified as the second best finisher but with his notable pace in the playoff, Grevers managed to outperform his toughest contender over the wall for the crown.
Grevers remained marginally ahead of his opponent and reached the wall for gold medal with a wonderful effort of 49.89 seconds.
He was followed by Stanislav Donets of Russia, who failed to sustain his fastest qualification spot of the race and occupied silver medal of the race with a nice timing of 49.91 seconds.
The second fastest swimmer was chased by Guilherme Guido of Brazil, who was 0.59 seconds behind and secured bronze medal of the discipline by clocking a fantastic time of 50.50 seconds.
Guido was chased by Ashley Delaney of Australia, who stayed 0.11 seconds slower and concluded his race in fourth place by touching the wall with the timing of 50.61 seconds.
Subsequently, Delaney was traced by Robert Hurley of Australia, who was only 0.02 seconds away from his foregoing finisher and tapped the wall with an effort of 50.63 seconds for fifth position.
Sixth spot of the race was obtained by Radoslaw Kawecki of Poland, who stayed 0.12 seconds slower and surfaced on the wall with the timing of 50.75 seconds.
Kawecki was chased by Iskender Baslakov of Turkey, who stayed 0.01 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and touched the wall with a timing of 50.76 seconds for seventh place.
Last position of the race was obtained by Christian Diener of Germany, who was 0.51 seconds behind and posted a time of 51.27 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, Grevers was contented with his unmatchable pace in the playoff and stressed his desire of making his fans happy by accomplishing the same in forthcoming swimming tournaments.
