Matthew Grevers dominates Men’s 50m freestyle - 2011 Southwest Classic Tucson
The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games gold medallist, Matthew Grevers, dominated proceedings in the Men’s 50m freestyle category on the last day of the 2011 Southwest Classic Tucson.
Southwest Classic Tucson is one of the most important international swim meets, as it precedes the upcoming 2011 Shanghai World Championships, in July.
Grevers won the gold medal of the 50m sprint by touching the wall in an astonishing time of 22.93 seconds. The 26-year-old American swimmer sustained his fastest qualification spot and claimed the title in scintillating fashion. He was 1.70 seconds ahead
of Masayuki Kishida of Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics-AZ, who completed his lap in a second fastest time of 23.23 seconds. Their team-member, Darian R Townsend, followed them on the podium for the bronze medal by producing a time of 23.34 seconds.
Grevers won two gold medals in the 4*100m freestyle and 4*100m medley relay, along with a silver medal in the individual 100m back-stroke at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He also defended his titles of the relay events at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
The champion swimmer, who qualified into the semi-finals by clocking a time of 23.00 seconds, improved his timing by 0.07 seconds to conquer the gold medal.
The fourth fastest spot of the event was secured by Luke A Pechmann of Tucson Ford, who ended his swim in a time of 23.40 seconds. Pechmann was followed by his team-member, Kelly P Wyman, who appeared as the fifth fastest swimmer on the finishing wall, posting
a time of 23.55 seconds.
Moments later, Nick S Popov completed his swim to settle as the sixth finisher, touching the wall in a time of 24.09 seconds. He was followed by Giles P Smith of Unattached and Craig Jordens of Tucson Ford, who concluded their swims in the seventh and eighth
positions, with timings of 24.31 and 25.96 seconds, respectively.
Grevers expressed happiness over his comfortable victory, while the crowd acknowledged the astonishing efforts of the participants who were engaged with each other to conquer the title of the freestyle event.
