Matthew Grevers makes Olympic record in Men’s 100m backstroke – 2012 London Olympic Games
American veteran, Matthew Grevers made the Olympic record of Men’s 100m backstroke on third day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in London Aquatic Centre on Monday, July 30.
The event was dominated by American swimmer, Grevers and Nick Thoman, who secured top two positions of the discipline. Grevers showed no leniency to his challengers and reached the wall for first position.
The 27-year-old Grevers remained in a full body length lead over his strongest challenger and cemented his place on top of the medal rostrum for gold medal by clocking a time of 52.16 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Thoman, who remained 0.76 seconds apart and reached the victory stand for silver medal by clocking a time of 52.92 seconds.
Thoman was trailed by Ryosuke Irie of Japan, who stayed only 0.05 seconds slower form upsetting his former finisher and tapped the finishing end for bronze medal by producing a time of 52.97 seconds.
Similarly, Irie was chased by Camille Lacourt of France, who was 0.11 seconds apart and ended his race in a time of 53.08 seconds for fourth position.
Fifth finest spot of the event was obtained by Liam Tancock of Great Britain, who stayed 0.27 seconds behind and failed to improve his position in the playoff. Tancock tried hard to upset his former finisher in the second half of the race and settled on
the finishing end as fifth fastest swimmer with the timing of 53.35 seconds.
The British swimmer was followed by Helge Meeuw of Germany, who stayed 0.13 seconds apart and finished sixth in the event with the timing of 53.48 seconds.
Meeuw was followed by Hayden Stoeckel of Australia, who remained 0.07 seconds slower and touched the wall with the timing of 53.55 seconds for seventh position.
Last spot of the race was obtained by Feiyi Cheng of China, who concluded his swim in eighth best place by reporting a time of 53.77 seconds.
In addition, Grevers was contented with his title claiming effort and received massive admiration from the crowd at the victory ceremony of the event.
