Matthew Griffin rules The Lakes with a heavy heart
Where Kyle Stanley ruled the Crooked Cat GC yesterday, with a 65 for Q school, Matthew Griffin is reported to shoot the same today, to lead the Lakes at the Australian
Open.
According to the leader board scenario, Griffin carded an
extraordinary 7 under, which handed him a solid 65 at the start of the Australian Open 2010. The Open is scheduled to be played from the 2nd of December till the 5th of this month and is reported to hold a $ 1,500,000 expensive field. The classy field has welcomed
the likes of Adam Scott, Geoff Ogilvy and Aaron Baddeley, along with John Senden, Michael Sim, Steven Bowditch and Peter O'Malley. With Scott, defending his 2009 held title, Greg Norman is doing more than just being an ambassador. The Shark has decided to
attack the Australian grounds.
As far as the weather is concerned, the Wednesday's pro-am was bought to a standstill, after the rain hammered the GC. As rain surged The Lakes,
the Course superintendent had to double his ground staff to more than 30, to deal with the deluge. Russell Fletcher declared the tournament and the rain condition to be either, an all-day or an all-week, situation. Surprisingly,
the first round of the Open presented good conditions for the golfers and Griffin made the best use of it.However, the-twenty-seven-year old wasn’t
cheerful at all and was playing with a heavy heart. For Griffin, this spell hasn’t been easy and his appearance at the Australian Open wasn’t without the memories of his late caddie, Peter Beck.According to news, Beck died suddenly about a month
ago and had been Griffin’s caddie, for a prolonged stretch.
Griffin, held a lead on shot over the golfer, John Senden and a 2 shot front over Alistair Presnell. The Australian golfer embellished his score card with a total amount
of 7 birdies, which all reigned from rather sympathetic greens .Apart from
Griffin, his fellow compatriot Stuart Appleby, Geoff Ogilvy, Peter Senior, Marc Leishman and Rod Pampling, are all standing at the T4 place following another Australian, Alistair Presnell. To complete the T4 nine player tie, Dudley Hart
stands as the only American who has his feet firmly, on the T4 ground. Apart from the top five scenarios, the sixth place in-progress honour, is crowded with a total of four players, plus one American golfer. John Daly is thus seen sharing a piece of T 13,
after carding a 69 between, Steve Collins and Edward
Stedman. ‘The Shark’ also charged The Lake with a good start and achieved a promising birdie at the tough 14th hole. His par 5 play was marked as a rescue parade by many critics as he played the ball over 200 meter of water. However, past the 14th, Greg Norman
slouched badly, with a double bogey, at the 27th hole. But, Griffin seemed to have no such problem with the greens. According to him, the best thing about his R1 play has been the bogey-free exhibit.
